I love church.
I love that it helps me want to be better and gives me a chance to help others. I love that it frees me from the burden of always having to be right and reminds me that ALL people are made in God's image. I love that it gives me a chance to connect with something bigger than me and gives shape to my life.
I am a dad of two young, beautiful, adventurous kids, Theo and Mac - and in all their exploring, I want to set them up to find those things that really matter.
I am a husband of one very strong woman, Katherine - and as I partner with her, I want to press into those things that really matter and be the best person I can, to support and love her, just like she does for me.
I love that church helps me do that... and that it offers me grace when I screw up in the process.
I also love that church helps reframe the stuff we love to do as a family:
Family hikes become a reason to appreciate wonderful, unique gifts from God.
Dinner time becomes a chance to actually stop for a minute and give thanks for all that we have.
Even binge-watching shows on Netflix can become a chance not only to be engrossed in a compelling story, but also to think deeply about what it means to be human (and about how the whole thing can go terribly, terribly wrong if we're not careful).
I love that church can make life mean more.
I love church, and I think we have good one here.
Hi There! I'm Katherine. I am so thankful to be a pastor at Bonner Springs UMC. Life can be really hard sometimes; we all have our struggles. I am passionate about helping people see the way that Jesus' love can be a healing force in their lives. Along with being a pastor, I love spending time with my best friend/husband/co-pastor, Andy Frazier, and our super cool baby boys (Theo and Mac). I love coffee, pastries, bike riding, nature walks, reading theology, hanging with my little sisters, honest conversations and watching movies. Oh, and cats, I love cats. I am excited to get to know you.
Pastor of Congregational Care
I am a retired Elder in the Great Plains Conference who moved to the Bonner Springs area in 2011 when I retired after 40 years of ministry. After a short respite (I think well deserved) I was invited to join the staff doing visitation and helping with the worship services. I am interested in science and even preached once on the Theory of Relativity. I have many hobbies including astronomy, model railroading, and amateur radio. My wife, Judy, and I love to take cruises and train rides.
My name is Lynn Graham, and I am the church’s administrative assistant. I enjoy working with the members and supporting the ministry of the church. Prior to working at Bonner Springs UMC, I was a civil engineer working in road design, and then a stay-at-home mom.
When I am not working, I am busy spending time with my husband and three teenage children. I spend a lot of time being a chauffeur, which is a great time to hear about my kids’ days. I enjoy reading, doing puzzles, playing in our city band, and attending school activities. I am looking forward to the day my kids leave the nest so that I can travel and see more of this great country.
Music Program Director
I am the organist/pianist/choir accompanist/Chancel Bell Choir director for the church. I have been playing for churches the last hundred years or so, and have been at BSUMC for the past 41 years. My music selections range from Bach to Bon Jovi (Livin' on a Prayer was a recent wedding postlude). I don't have to be wheeled up to the keys yet, though, because my husband, two grown children, and eleven grands keep me moving.
I made the rounds of state universities back in the day, earning a BS in Music Education from K-State, an MS in Music Education from KU, and School Administrator Certification from Emporia State. This piano/flute major taught band and orchestra in the Marion and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools for nineteen years before moving to the dark side of administration. I was the Coordinator of Fine Arts & PE for the KCKPS for twenty years before retiring. Now I supervise student teachers for the UMKC Conservatory of Music, play with grands, and say what I think. BSUMC is my spiritual home, and being a part of the staff is one my biggest joys.
As a flutist, soprano and choral conductor, I am an active musician in the Kansas City area. As a flutist I have played with: newEar, KC Symphony, KC Chamber Orchestra, KC Ballet, and KC Civic Opera. I also play for Starlight Theater and Theater League productions. My recent collaborations include recording for a documentary titled “We the People” created for IMAX Theater, and learning to play Asian flutes, called Dizi flutes, for a production of Miss Saigon.
As a singer I add my soprano voice to Schola Cantorum, a professional ensemble that provides music at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As conductor, I enjoy leading the Chancel choir at Bonner Springs UMC. My favorite musical collaboration, though, is with my husband; pianist, singer, and composer: Robert Pherigo. My son Lucas is a talented singer-songwriter and barbershop enthusiast in the Kansas City area. I am grateful for a life filled with music.
Hi! My name is Jacob Patterson, and I am a 24 year old teacher for the Olathe school district where I teach third grade. My wife, Hannah, and I lead the worship at the evening Bridge service at BSUMC. We thoroughly enjoy being able to share our faith with others through music! In my free time, you can find me doing one of five things: watching soccer meticulously (GO MANCHESTER UNITED), cooking and enjoying food with Hannah, playing with our pets Leo and Elvis, doing voice impressions of various cartoon characters, or playing Mario Kart with Andy! I hope to see you at our Bridge service sometime on Sunday night @ 6.
Hello all! My name is Hannah Patterson, and I, along with my husband Jacob, lead the worship service on Sunday evenings at BSUMC. I am currently a first grade teacher at Manchester Park Elementary. This is my first year teaching, and I have loved it so far! Some things to know about me are that I love singing and sharing my faith through music, I love playing and cuddling with my dog Elvis and my cat Leo, and I love spending time with my friends and family. You can usually find me doing one of those three things!
Hi! I am Lauren. I am the morning children’s ministry director. That means that I am lucky to teach the elementary age kids in the church about the Bible and how they can take those lessons with them out into the world. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Religion from Baker University. I am originally from Illinois but moved to Kansas for college and to be closer to extended family. I am married to the love of my life and a mom to two boys. I am also a huge animal lover and even have a Facebook page dedicated to my cats. I live my life with the motto of FROG (Fully Rely On God) and have frogs in many special places in my life.
I have been a part of Bonner Springs UMC since 2004. I have been involved with youth group and have served as both a childcare worker and Bkids Director. Outside of church activities, I am a social butterfly who can usually be found volunteering for/attending local events, exploring Kansas City's food scene, or travelling around the country whether it be for work or for fun! I have worked in the travel and tourism industry for more than 5 years. I love spending time with my family, especially my niece and nephews, and hanging out with my fluffy fur baby, Paris.
My name is Jennifer Kennedy. I have worked in the nursery at BSUMC for 17 years. I have 3 kids: Seth, a freshman at KU, Savana, a Sophomore in High School, and Saige, who just started preschool. It's been a blessing to have them grow up in this church. In my free time I enjoy being involved with their many activities. I also enjoy spending time in the community, going to concerts, and hanging out with my family.
Bridge Technical Director
Hello, my name is Matt Beets. I have served as the Technical Director for the Contemporary Service at Bonner Springs United Methodist Church since 2002. My wife and I have two active kids who are into sports, acting and scouts. When I do have some free time, I enjoy working on projects around our house.
