CHARLES GRANT

Pastor of Congregational Care

I am a retired Elder in the Great Plains Conference who moved to the Bonner Springs area in 2011 when I retired after 40 years of ministry. After a short respite (I think well deserved) I was invited to join the staff doing visitation and helping with the worship services. I am interested in science and even preached once on the Theory of Relativity. I have many hobbies including astronomy, model railroading, and amateur radio. My wife, Judy, and I love to take cruises and train rides.

JEAN NEY

Music Program Director

I am the organist/pianist/choir accompanist/Chancel Bell Choir director for the church.  I have been playing for churches the last hundred years or so, and have been at BSUMC for the past 41 years.  My music selections range from Bach to Bon Jovi (Livin' on a Prayer was a recent wedding postlude). I don't have to be wheeled up to the keys yet, though, because my husband, two grown children, and eleven grands keep me moving.

I made the rounds of state universities back in the day, earning a BS in Music Education from K-State, an MS in Music Education from KU, and School Administrator Certification from Emporia State.  This piano/flute major taught band and orchestra in the Marion and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools for nineteen years before moving to the dark side of administration. I was the Coordinator of Fine Arts & PE for the KCKPS for twenty years before retiring.  Now I supervise student teachers for the UMKC Conservatory of Music, play with grands, and say what I think. BSUMC is my spiritual home, and being a part of the staff is one my biggest joys.

LYRA PHERIGO

Choir Director

As a flutist, soprano and choral conductor, I am an active musician in the Kansas City area. As a flutist I have played with: newEar, KC Symphony, KC Chamber Orchestra, KC Ballet, and KC Civic Opera. I also play for Starlight Theater and Theater League productions. My recent collaborations include recording for a documentary titled “We the People” created for IMAX Theater, and learning to play Asian flutes, called Dizi flutes, for a production of Miss Saigon.

As a singer I add my soprano voice to Schola Cantorum, a professional ensemble that provides music at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. As conductor, I enjoy leading the Chancel choir at Bonner Springs UMC. My favorite musical collaboration, though, is with my husband; pianist, singer, and composer: Robert Pherigo. My son Lucas is a talented singer-songwriter and barbershop enthusiast in the Kansas City area. I am grateful for a life filled with music.
